The shadow

The Invisible Cost

3 min read

Every bill comes due.

If you don't pay it directly, it is paid by your body, your energy, your relationships or the ceiling of your team. And very often it is paid in silence, for years, without you looking at it.

Your pattern has worked for you. That is why you don't see it. The reactive mode isn't stupid: on the contrary, it tends to be very effective in the short term. It gets you out of the bind, calms your anxiety, gives you a quick sense of control, protection or worth.

That is why you repeat it.

No one repeats what doesn't serve them somehow.

The trouble is that the bill is paid in instalments, in places you don't always look at.

It is paid in the body: the tension you already take as normal, the sleep that never quite restores, that background fatigue you put down to age or work.

It is paid in your energy: how hard it is to get going, how long the boost lasts, how you reach Fridays, how much you need to switch off because you are never really rested.

It is paid in your relationships: the conversations you don't have, the distance you have mistaken for respect, the intimacy that thins out without a sound.

And it is paid in your team's ceiling: in everything that doesn't grow because your automatic mode takes up too much space.

The cost is invisible for two reasons. Because it is slow, and the slow rarely alarms. And because you have normalised it: you have been paying it so long that it now seems the natural price of things.

But not everything habitual is normal. And not everything you have learned to endure deserves to keep being endured.

Naming the bill is the beginning of change.

What you don't look at, you don't let go of.

To notice: what is your automatic mode costing you that you have stopped seeing from seeing it so often?

To try this week: draw two columns. In one, what your pattern gives you. In the other, what it takes from you. Don't pick just one. Look at them together, on the same page. That complete picture is the lever.
