The mirror: why the Creative isn't trained head-on

5 min read

There's a trap many development plans fall into: treating a leadership competency as if it were a technique. Read about it. Sign up for a course. Put it in the annual plan. A year later, nothing has moved.

It usually isn't lack of will. It's that the competencies that truly matter are caught sideways, not head-on. They aren't learned; they're embodied.

Composure isn't missing only because you don't know how to regulate yourself; often it's missing because rigid control occupies its place. Authenticity isn't missing only because you can't speak plainly; it's missing because pleasing pays off in the short run. The capacity to grow others isn't missing out of indifference; it's missing because «I can handle everything» leaves it no room.

That's why pushing a competency directly works so poorly. It's like trying to make a plant grow by pulling on the stem. What grows, grows when whatever was covering it loosens its grip.

That is the relationship between Criton's two modules. In Unveil Your Shadow you look at the pattern that fires under pressure: what it gives you, what it costs you, what it protects. In Embody the Creative you work the other side: the competency that pattern kept hidden. They're not two paths. They're the same path seen from both sides of the mirror.

And there's a second idea, just as important: you're not starting from zero. None of these competencies is foreign to you. Every one of them has shown up at some point, even if only for a moment. The day you held the silence instead of jumping in, the conversation you did have, the decision you handed over whole and it worked out well.

The job isn't to manufacture something new. It's to recognise the exception and give it more room.

That's why this module starts in an unusual way: it doesn't first ask what you lack, but when it already came out of you. Then it names what covers it. Then it takes it into a small, concrete practice that fits your real calendar. And then it integrates it: raising the bar until the gesture stops costing effort and starts being yours.

No marathons. No theory you can't use on Tuesday at nine. One focus competency at a time, chosen by you, often suggested by your coach.

If you've worked your Shadow, you already know what you need to let go of. This module is about what appears when you let it go.

This module is our own adaptation of The Leadership Circle® model by Bob Anderson and Bill Adams, which we have used at Addventure since 2010.
