Phase 2 · Name the reactive pattern

3 min read

If the competency already comes out of you sometimes, the obvious question is: why doesn't it come out more?

That's the second phase. And the answer is almost never «lack of practice». It's that something occupies its place.

Creative competencies don't grow head-on: they rise when the reactive pattern covering them drops. Rigid control covers composure. Pleasing covers authenticity. «I can handle everything» covers your capacity to grow others. Pushing the competency without looking at the reactive is pulling on the plant's stem.

How to do it well: if you've already worked through Unveil Your Shadow, this is where the circle closes. Your pattern and this competency are the two faces of the same mirror, and Crito will help you connect them. If you haven't, there's no need to start with a test: you explore from the opposite scene. Find a recent moment where the competency did not come out, and look at what you did instead. That thing you did instead has a pattern, and the pattern has a reason: it protects you from something.

The key to this phase is the tone. The reactive isn't a moral defect; it's a protection with an outdated price. It gets named without guilt. With guilt nothing is learned; it only hides better.

The traps: turning the phase into self-flagellation («I'm such a controller, what a disaster»), or doing the opposite: staying at the label without going down to the scene. The label doesn't transform. The scene does.

You know the phase is done when you can say, without drama: «when the competency doesn't come out, what I do instead is X, and I do it because it protects me from Y». With that in hand, practising small stops being wishful thinking and becomes surgery.
