The shadow

Who Decides Inside You

3 min read

Picture a theatre.

On stage is you, today, in a meeting room. But behind the curtain other characters are still performing: a demanding mother, an invulnerable father, a critical teacher, a home where you couldn't fail, an environment where asking was dangerous, a story in which you had to become strong too soon.

These are not metaphors. They are internalised scenes and voices, still alive, still deciding in your name.

You don't lead from your competences alone. You lead from a biography.

Each person arrives in the room with a theatre inside: old scenes, inherited voices, invisible loyalties, an emotional history that lights up on its own when something presses. You are not only the executive on the org chart. You are also the child who was pushed, the teenager who learned not to need, the offspring who had to hold things up, the person who discovered early which parts of themselves were best hidden.

Your reactive pattern is not a technical fault. It is an old script playing out on new stages.

That is why you sometimes overreact. A comment in a meeting hurts more than it reasonably should. A person stirs a distrust they haven't earned. A type of conflict paralyses you again and again. A small criticism lands on a large wound.

You are not responding only to what is happening today. You are repeating a scene.

Seeing your script is not digging through your childhood for sport. It is something far more practical: no longer confusing the present with a repetition of the past. Because when you confuse the two, you ask today's person to pay bills that aren't theirs.

That is one of the shadow's quietest harms: it turns present people into characters from an old story.

The day you start to recognise your theatre, you gain a margin that is small and enormous at once: the margin to choose instead of repeat.

To notice: when something disproportionately triggers you, what old scene does that feeling resemble?

To try this week: the next time you flare up inside, pause for a second before acting and ask yourself: is this from now, or is it from before?
